Causes Of Binge Eating Disorder: An Overview

Binge eating disorder is a psychological disorder. There are various symptoms. Causes of Binge Eating Disorder are plenty. But before discussing the causes and symptoms, let us discuss what binge eating disorder really is.

Binge eating is a state of disorder where a person tends to eat large amount of food. He eats them at very frequent intervals. But they often feel unhappy, disgusted or even depressed about the following fact. A person having a binge eating disorder may have the following symptoms.

 

First, the person loses control over the amount of food consumed by him.

Second, the tendency to consume large amounts of food more than any normal person is a clear indication to watch for.

Third, eating faster during binge eating than normal eating.

Fourth, there is a tendency to eat until the person feels physically uncomfortable.

Fifth, the person eats even though he is not really hungry.

Sixth, the person eats alone. This is especially during binge eating as he does not want anyone to discover his disorder.

Seventh, the person even eats alone during the normal eating. This is to avoid embarrassment about the food.

Eighth, the person feels depressed or disgusted after binge eating.

After understanding the symptoms of binge eating, let us now discover the causes. But the causes are not very clearly found out. This is because serious study on binge eating disorder began very recently. But it is true that it has no single cause like any other mental disorder. This disorder, however, arises from psychological, biological and socio-cultural factors that include family, relatives and life experiences.

Let us take a closer look at each of these individual factors.

In biological factors, people may be vulnerable biologically for developing this disorder. Here the genes as well as the brain chemicals may be responsible for this type of disorder. A number of researchers are studying the appetite regulation of central nervous system. They are also studying it along with gastrointestinal changes. This might help them find out more causes of the binge eating disorder.

As already known, binge eating disorder is a psychological problem. Hence, in the psychological factor, people with emotional and psychological problems suffer from this disorder. The psychological factors that result in binge eating may be, low self esteem, impulsive behavior, anxiety and the various mood swings.

The most important socio-cultural factor which led to the disorder, binge eating is the influence of the Western culture. In the Western culture, there is always a desire to be thin. Thinness is considered fashionable too. This desire increases with those who suffer from the binge eating disorder. This trend of thinness is now finding its way to South Asian cultures as well.

However, it should be kept in mind that binge eating may not result in permanent weight loss. But there would be fluctuation between weight gain and weight loss.

Many researchers are yet trying to find out newer Causes of Binge Eating Disorder. All the causes are not totally found out as this is a newer case of study. Maybe the future holds positive promise.
