All About Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder or BED, is a kind of psychiatric disorder. Some basic information About Binge Eating Disorder is provided below.

Patients suffering from BED normally show the symptoms of not being hungry yet eating huge amounts of food. This shows that the patients donĀ't have control over food consumption. The patient eats unusually huge amounts of food at once, much more than normal. Also, the patient eats far more rapidly during his binge episodes than he would during normal episodes of eating.

A patient eats until he becomes physically uncomfortable. The fact is he eats large quantity of food even at times when he is not actually hungry. He will usually eat alone while having a binge eating episode. This way, he avoids being discovered by others. He often eats alone due to embarrassment. He would normally feel displeased, depressed, or even guilty after a binge eating episode.

These symptoms are also displayed by those having a disorder called Bulimia Nervosa. While bulimics usually weigh normal or have only a little possibility of being overweight, those with BED are always obese. Yet, normal weighing people may also be prone to this disorder and canĀ' t be totally ruled out as possible victims.

No one knows the exact cause of BED. But some people conjecture that depression is a main cause of Binge Eating Disorder. It is not certainly established that BED and dieting are related though theories have been put forth relating these two.

Since people having BED usually eat food with excessive sugar content, there may be other health complications to it. These patients sometimes get so much affected that they start absenting themselves from office, schools and other places. More often than not, they hide their disorder so successfully that it becomes difficult to detect it, thus delaying treatment.

This is a serious disorder and prompt treatment is necessary. The patient needs help from professionals like physicians, psychiatrists, nutritionists, clinical social workers and psychologists. A good way of treating BED is through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This helps people to control their eating schedule. It also helps people to change anything that are out of the ordinary.

Patients who have this disorder may seek help from Mayo Clinic. They offer a series of therapeutic treatments for BET patients. One of the methods that the clinic adopts is Psychotherapy. However, not every kind of psychotherapy will help. Mayo Clinic uses dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy and cognitive behavior therapy to treat this disorder.

They also make use of medicine. Though the FDA does not specify any kind of medication for treating BET, Mayo Clinic uses some appetite suppressants. They also have Behavioral Weight loss programs. These are monitored to ensure that the patients get the required nutrients while trying to lose weight. They also provide self-help techniques that motivate patients to help themselves.

Besides Mayo Clinic, there are many other hospitals and clinics that offer treatments and motivational strategies. The information about Binge Eating Disorder, provided by most of these clinics will help educate people about its existence and make them prepared to handle it.
